Garrett Island, Forever PreservedCecil Land Trust was instrumental in the conservation of the iconic Garrett Island, an approximately 200-acre island in the Susquehanna River, which sits between Perryville on the Cecil County side and Havre de Grace on the Harford County side. Headed for development in the late 1990s, CLT and others stepped in to purchase the land and transfer it to the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, which currently manages Garrett Island as part of the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge.

Restoring Stream Banks and Native Trout
36 acres of riparian land around Basin Run and Principio Creek have been or will be restored through Cecil Land Trust’s stream restoration work, resulting in improved water quality in the Chesapeake Bay. The Basin Run project restored 12 acres of riparian land and brought back a naturally-reproducing population of Brown Trout in the restored section of the stream.
CLT and its conservation partners hope for similar results from the new 24-acre Principio Creek restoration project. Read more |
PartnershipsCecil Land Trust leads the Cecil Conservation Partnership, a growing conservation network of organizations focused on conservation and protecting all aspects of our environment. Our partnership with local schools like West Nottingham Academy in Colora, means we are educating the next generation of conservationists, perhaps our most important work of all!
