After years of working on other farms Tom and Sarah met while managing neighboring CSAs in Pennsylvania. We decided it was time to start our own farm and searched the mid-Atlantic area for a piece of land. 

 In the winter of 2010 we rented land at Nanasau Farm in Joppa, Harford Co. MD and launched Flying Plow. We started that first season with about 50 CSA members and growing on just a few acres. Over the first few seasons we added several farmers markets, expanded the CSA membership as well as our beef & chicken production. 

We purchased the farm in Rising Sun, Cecil Co, MD at the end of 2013 and gave Flying Plow a permanent home. 

Now going into our 10th season our hope is to provide organic, nutrient dense food for our community for years to come.

For over 48 years, we thought we were living the American Dream by running our own family owned fulfillment business. We worked hard, had great clients, awesome employees and had a very successful business. We thought life was great. We worked day-in and day-out as most business owners do. But the corporate world started changing and where your hard work and the quality of the services you provided didn't matter to your clients as much as the nickel they could save, we realized it was not such a satisfying world to be in. We had a nice lifestyle but our lives no longer felt fulfilled. Something was missing.

So in 2002, we decided it was time to make a life change. We had always dreamed of having our own farm where we could raise and care for our horses (Frosty and Jason), find some peace and quiet, slow down, relax and enjoy life.

After looking around for a bit, we found a beautiful 20 acre farm in Cecil County, MD. It was perfect. So we promptly sold our home, packed up our belongings including our two sons (Christopher and Steven), two horses, and three Labrador Retrievers, and hightailed to our farm. It was the best decision we ever made.

But like most farm owners, we wanted to find a way to have the farm help pay for itself. So we started researching and one day we came across some literature that talked about alpacas. Quite honestly we had not even heard of alpacas until reading the literature but it was enough to captivate our interest. We started researching and visiting alpaca farms and it wasn't long before we fell totally in-love with them. Of course you can see why! So in August of 2012, we took possession of our first eleven alpacas. I was going to start with three but I took Mitchell and we ended up with eleven! Of course they are like potato chips, you cannot have too many and they come in so many beautiful colors. It was the second best decision we ever made!
Not only do we enjoy the financial rewards from our alpacas, they bring so much love and fun to our lives. We know how truly blessed we are so we decided to open our farm to the public and share the Alpaca Lifestyle with all of our visitors. Life on our farm is truly a wonderful thing! Since April 2013, Caitlin & Anne Adams have run Opening Number Riding Academy, a horse program that focuses on all of the wonderful activities you can do with horses. Between Caitlin & Anne, there is over 60 years of horse experience, ranging in a variety of different activities, such as Western gaming, English showing, and Competitive Driving.

Unlike most riding programs, we offer EVERY different type of discipline, such as Western, English, and Driving. Painted Sky Alpaca Farm & Fiber Mill is the only Alpaca Farm in the Mid-Atlantic corridor where visitors can experience the entire life cycle of fiber processing. Feel the fiber in it's raw natural state while loving on the alpacas. Tour the fiber mill and learn how raw fleece is transformed into beautiful yarns, rovings and batts. Visit the gift shop where you'll find a large selection of finished goods made from alpaca including hats, scarves, gloves, sweaters, shawls, wraps, socks, toys, alpaca dryer balls, alpaca felted soaps and more!

Description / history of your business.	​For over 48 years, we thought we were living the American Dream by running our own family owned fulfillment business. We worked hard, had great clients, awesome employees and had a very successful business. We thought life was great. We worked day-in and day-out as most business owners do. But the corporate world started changing and where your hard work and the quality of the services you provided didn't matter to your clients as much as the nickel they could save, we realized it was not such a satisfying world to be in. We had a nice lifestyle but our lives no longer felt fulfilled. Something was missing. So in 2002, we decided it was time to make a life change. We had always dreamed of having our own farm where we could raise and care for our horses (Frosty and Jason), find some peace and quiet, slow down, relax and enjoy life. After looking around for a bit, we found a beautiful 20 acre farm in Cecil County, MD. It was perfect. So we promptly sold our home, packed up our belongings including our two sons (Christopher and Steven), two horses, and three Labrador Retrievers, and hightailed to our farm. It was the best decision we ever made. But like most farm owners, we wanted to find a way to have the farm help pay for itself. So we started researching and one day we came across some literature that talked about alpacas. Quite honestly we had not even heard of alpacas until reading the literature but it was enough to captivate our interest. We started researching and visiting alpaca farms and it wasn't long before we fell totally in-love with them. Of course you can see why! So in August of 2012, we took possession of our first eleven alpacas. I was going to start with three but I took Mitchell and we ended up with eleven! Of course they are like potato chips, you cannot have too many and they come in so many beautiful colors. It was the second best decision we ever made! Not only do we enjoy the financial rewards from our alpacas, they bring so much love and fun to our lives. We know how truly blessed we are so we decided to open our farm to the public and share the Alpaca Lifestyle with all of our visitors. Life on our farm is truly a wonderful thing!
